Not enough NEAR for fees

A sell stops with You need more NEAR for network fees, or a buy shows Not enough NEAR. What the trading account needs free in plain NEAR, and how to fix it.

You need 0.2085 more NEAR for network fees. Most of it comes back after the sell.
On a sell, with Deposit and Dismiss. The number is what is missing. A buy that is too large says You need, the amount, and more NEAR, and the ticket button reads Not enough NEAR · Deposit.

NEAR makes a transaction pay for all the gas it attaches before it runs, and your trading account also keeps a reserve it never spends. So a trade needs plain NEAR free at the moment it signs, even a sell that will bring NEAR back:

Part Amount Returned?
Reserve 0.05 N Stays in the account
Gas held while it signs up to 0.301 N Most of it, seconds after the trade
Trading fee 0.75% No

The gas actually burned is about 0.003 NEAR a trade. The rest of the hold comes back.

With 0.15 NEAR it is 0.2085 NEAR short and stops before anything is sent. When you buy, the ticket keeps the gas for one later sell free, so the account has the NEAR to sell a token bought this way. That is why N available in the ticket is about 0.4 NEAR less than the plain NEAR in your account. Older positions, or tokens that arrived some other way, don’t have that room set aside.

Wrapped NEAR (wNEAR) can’t pay a sell’s network fees. On a buy, the ticket counts it: if converting your wNEAR would make the buy fit, the button reads Not enough NEAR · Convert to NEAR.

  1. Add NEAR: open the account menu and choose Deposit. About 0.4 NEAR of plain NEAR covers the reserve and one sell’s gas hold.
  2. Or convert wNEAR: press Not enough NEAR · Convert to NEAR in the ticket, or Convert to NEAR on the Portfolio’s wNEAR row. Converting is a transaction too and needs about 0.2 NEAR of plain NEAR itself.
  3. Trade again.

A smaller sell won’t fix a gas shortfall, since it attaches the same gas. If the message is “Keeping 0.05 NEAR for fees — trade a little less or top up.”, only the fee is short, and a slightly smaller trade does go through.

When the trade stops here, the app sends nothing. Gas held for a trade that does go through comes back seconds later. Fees and costs covers how the hold is worked out.
